Rust
Rust means weakness
Iron is a material widely used for its strength. However, iron begins to this key characteristic as soon as it starts to rust.
The combination of moisture and oxygen is a sure cause of rust. If you want to protect iron against rust, you have to remove one of these two contributory factors – the moisture.
Moisture removal is a science
There are several factors at work when trying to ensure consistent, controlled levels of moisture. The first is the ‘relative humidity’ (RH%), which describes exactly how much moisture is present in the air – the more moisture there is, the faster iron will rust.
For example, it is virtually impossible for any rust or corrosion to arise in clean air with a relative humidity of 45% or less. If the RH increases to 60%, corrosion increases as well. As humidity increases past this point, the rate of rust formation and corrosion increases exponentially.
The temperatures of the air and the iron also play a role in determining how and to what extent moisture in the air gives rise to rust.
Stable, low humidity is the answer
Cotes dehumidification systems enable you to establish and maintain the levels of humidity necessary to avoid rust and other similar metal corrosion problems.
We recommend a relative humidity level between 50–55% to achieve the most effective prevention of rust on iron. Such a stable, dry environment enables you to make sure iron structures, surfaces and components retain their strength and integrity for much longer.
