Slicing ice arena operating costs

18.04.2011

Recovering energy – recouping costs

The Kvik Arena in western Denmark was faced by constantly increasing energy costs for the dehumidification systems used in its two ice rinks. The units ran round the clock, powered by costly electricity.

To help arena management roll back the biggest single cost item on its operating budget, Cotes proposed that waste heat from the compressors in the rink cooling plant be recycled to power state-of-the-art Cotes humidity management systems.

The units installed in both rinks are now controlled by the dew point at ice level, rather than relative humidity. Both now use recovered waste energy for air regeneration, resulting in major monthly savings on the ice rink’s operating costs.
